Peaches- Shape

When inspecting peaches and nectarines it really helps if you have some experience dealing with the different varieties.  The shape will vary from variety to variety and even the same variety grown in different regions of the country may look different.  Unfortunately most of us have very little experience when it comes to peach varieties.

These peaches appear to be elongated, with narrow tips.  Do they meet the shape requirements of the U.S. No. 1 Grade?  The standards state the peaches must be well formed, meaning, the shape of the peach may be slightly irregular but not to the extent that its appearance is materially affected.  These peaches do meet the requirements of being well formed and should not be scored as a defect.  Misshapen peaches are usually lopsided, one shoulder higher than the other, or with enlarged seams.

These peaches, shown above are scored as defects, not being well formed.  It is always difficult to determine if the slightly misshapen peach is a defect or if it is characteristic of the variety.  Do your best to judge the appearance as it relates to the other peaches in the container.  If the majority of the peaches all have the same general shape characteristics then you must assume the shape is characteristic of the variety.
